The 48th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from September 13 to October 8, 2021. On September 22, Associate Professor Zhang Yue, a representative of the China Society for Human Rights Studies and an associate professor of the Institute of Human Rights of Southeast University, held an interactive dialogue with an independent expert on democratic and equitable international order via video on the challenges posed to the international equitable order by the extreme imbalance in the distribution of the new crown vaccine worldwide today. Associate Professor Zhang Yue said that many developed countries are blatantly hoarding vaccines and using vaccine distribution to strengthen nationalism and diplomatic power. In contrast, only one percent of the population in low-income countries has received no less than one dose of the vaccine. This vaccine apartheid is perpetuating the global crisis, as developing countries account for more than 85 percent of global deaths from the new strain of the virus. China, a major contributor to the fight against the epidemic, has provided assistance to 82 countries, the World Health Organization and the African Union, most of which are developing countries. But the fight against the epidemic requires more international players to take responsibility. The international community should strengthen cooperation in the equitable distribution of vaccines, including raising more funds by developed economies, prioritizing vaccine doses to the most vulnerable groups worldwide, and achieving transparent distribution and safe use of vaccines based on the non-discriminatory principle of non-discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity, religious culture and other factors. The presentation by Associate Professor Yue Zhang and four other scholars was covered by CCTV News on the evening of October 9, 2021.
